I have do a lot of research on this topic and it always comes back the tribe. Now before you go off saying AQ is not Pashtun or any other Afghan tribe remember they have been there for an entire generation. Married into and started businesses with the tribes and pay attention the the Pashtun value on hospitality. The line "you've got the watches but we have the time" sums up the entire issue.
