This is interesting

I just saw in a 1963 article of future military weapon namely the demise of the M14 and the early approval of the AR-15/M6 about a need in the future of one to two sharpshooters per squad perhaps armed with the M14. Fast forward to today and what do we find? In the Marine Corps and the Army now have one to two designated marksmen per squad armed with either an M110 Semi Automatic Sniper System (SASS) or an updated M-14 both in 7.62x51. All the services tried a special purpose rifle (SPR) in 5.56 and while it was a great shooter and accurate it offered no ballistic advantage over an M-16 or M4. At that point M14s started coming out and the SR-25/M110 was quickly tested and adapted.
