Their has been some press on this already but I thought I would chime in.
SOCOM doing what SOCOM does has developed their own rifle the SCAR-L&H which has been discussed before. Now they have been developing their own rifle round. Designed to deliver better terminal effects. In other words knock someone on their back.

I think everyone can see the difference all from a round that does not kick like a 7.62x51 and is not a prairie dog killer like the 5.56. Also on a cost scale all you have to do is replace the uppers on M16 or M4 and modify the magazine. Bingo there you have it done. That leads the good reader to say hey what about SAWs. OK I got that one fixed use the new Mk48 Mod 0 which is about the same size as a M249 in 7.62x51. So we are back to two calibers and if some enterprising designer can fix the Mk48 to fire the 6.8 round. We would be down to one!!
This is a pipe dream anyway as ordance officals have stated that there is nothing wrong with the M-16 family or the 5.56 round and dont look to replace it until something that can dramatically increase lethality and dependability comes along. I guess they are waiting on lasers.

Politician and the Iowa Caucus
I have not posted on this cause I have been busy with other stuff. My lovely bride and I watched the caucus the other night as she is getting interested in the political process. Her thoughts
1. John Edwards "is freaking nuts"
2. Obama is full of crap
3. Hillary is a fake.
God I love this woman.
Anyway our current argument is about who she likes on the repubs. Currently the Huck is her guy. My thought is I doubt this sucker can find Afghanistan on a map. He is too soft on crime etc but she likes what he has to say so far. Thompson I like Fred but I think he is losing out due to his image. Mitt is a politician first to slick to pretty but I like some of his stuff. Rudy may not be good in the south where I live but I am kinda liking him. I got a few months to decide yet.
Personally I think they are all pretty much the same liars, thieves, and scoundrels. Hey they wouldn't be politicians otherwise would they. Power corrupts too bad we cannot find a person these days that wants to be a person in power go for a couple years then go back to their jobs. I would love to have an election where everyone running couldn't have held public office before.

I was reading up on my small arms of the world today and realized the Russians have gone back to the 7.62x39 round in their new assault rifle. I know I have read this but I dont guess is sunk in. I think because you still saw Russian troops with AK74s. The new series is guess what still AKs the AK103 and AK103-2 guess what they function the same operate the same etc..Also the Russians have come up with an interesting new SAW PKP 6P41 going back to the old 7.62x54R round. Will cause the squad to have to carry two different types of ammo but they have been using it in combat for some time now. Interesting going to bigger rounds to counter act US/Nato body armor and enhance range. Their .22 caliber service rifle experiment ended allot quicker than ours did. More on that later I have to do some looking.
